Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is the primary approach to treatment for anxiety and related disorders. CBT focuses on addressing the faulty thoughts (cognitions) and consequently the behaviors that result. CBT is the most well researched evidence based approach. It involves teaching the skills and strategies needed in order for individuals to overcome the problems they are facing.
CBT with ERP is one of the best known treatments for those with OCD and other related anxiety disorders. "Exposure" refers to the thoughts, images, or situations that make someone anxious. "Response prevention" refers to making the choice not to engage in the compulsive or ritualized behavior or thoughts. It is important not to give in to the behavior in order to see that drop in anxiety. This way, one can face their fears and not give in to what the "OCD" is telling them to do. This treatment is beneficial for all ages.
